Since its foundation in the motor business in Cambridge in 1909, Marshall of Cambridge has taken a keen interest in the development of young people. This has particularly included the encouragement of training and the advancement of skills.
The Company has formally taken on the sponsorship of Teversham Church of England Primary School, which is its nearest neighbouring school, in order to provide help and guidance with a wide range of technology projects. This has enabled the school to take part in the national "Young Engineer Science Project" which is organised annually by SETNET. A Marshall Aerospace manager has been appointed as principal point of contact for the school as a Governor and other members of staff are pleased to help the pupils with numeracy and literacy exercises as well as providing an insight into Engineering, Science and Technology.
Marshall of Cambridge also sponsors Bottisham Village College, a local secondary school. A Marshall Aerospace Graduate Engineer provides support for the school's technology projects and assists in a number of science related programmes. Visits for pupils are also arranged to the Company on a regular basis and help from the Company has enabled Bottisham Village College to play a prominent part in successful national Science Week projects. The Company has also extended its influence and help to Bottisham Village College by providing a senior former employee as one of the school's governors.
The third local school sponsored by the Company is Coleridge Community College and additionally, the Company provides strong support to another local school, Netherhall, with some of their Technology & IT projects. Finally, the Company sponsors “The Fields Early Years Centre” in Barnwell which provides ‘pre-school care and education’ for the very young. The Company assists with the governance at this school.
An Arkwright Scholarship has been established at the Perse School for Boys which has encouraged a number of pupils to study Engineering at University level. As a result of this encouragement, one talented student won one of the highly prestigious Nuffield Science Bursaries for 2000. The Group of Companies also plays a particularly active part in National Science Week and, in conjunction with Cambridge University, provides a nationally listed lecture. Marshall of Cambridge recognises the importance of providing strong training and encouragement to young people in order to prepare businesses for the challenges of the next century and is proud to be playing a very active part in a number of schools in the local community, where company directors, managers and staff help as governors, as well as with a number of projects and activities connected with Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In conjunction with Cambridge University Engineering Department, in 2000 the Company helped to establish the Sir Arthur Marshall Institute of Aeronautical Engineering at Cambridge University - www.samia.org.uk. This virtual Institute within the Department of Engineering, encourages the interdisciplinary study and application of Aeronautical Engineering and Sciences and provides opportunity for UK aerospace companies to be involved in both research and development projects within the Cambridge University Engineering Department. The Sir Arthur Marshall Institute is headed by the Francis Mond Professor of Aeronautical Engineering of Cambridge University, Professor Bill Dawes.
The Cambridge University Engineering Department is particularly well known internationally for its aerodynamics work in the fields of flow noise and acoustics, structural analysis, materials and material processing, control engineering and a blend of electronics with avionics. The work of the Engineering Department has particularly included the development of new materials and processes linked to innovative design. In particular, some of the developments of the Cambridge University Engineering Department, which includes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are used on a world wide basis and are now considered a "standard" design tool. Marshall is assisting the University with the management of the Institute which includes the appointment of a distinguished Board of patrons, the appointment of a number of Fellows and emeritus Professors to the Institute and the management of a range of seminars and learned conferences.
The Company also assists the University with its own community programme through the Cambridge Business Community Action Network, in addition to helping the University with educational visits to the Company.
